Harmonia |
|
A beginning
string instrument experience for students entering grades 2-4. Students
with no previous experience will have the choice to play violin, viola,
cello, or bass. Through weekly group lessons and orchestra rehearsals
students learn how to play their instrument with a strong emphasis on
individual attention. Tuition includes weekly group lesson and
rehearsal, all books and materials, and a minimum of 2 public
performances. (Average grades: 2-4)

Preludio |
|
A string orchestra and group lesson program for
students at the beginner to intermediate levels (2-3 years of study).
This orchestra will focus on the basic fundamentals of ensemble playing
and more difficult note reading
rhythmically and harmonically. Students may register for rehearsal only,
if they are taking other private/group lessons. Tuition includes weekly
lesson and rehearsal, all books and materials, and a minimum of 2 public
performances. (Average grades: 3-6)

Intermezzo |
|
A string orchestra for students at the intermediate
levels. This orchestra will focus on advanced ensemble skills and a more
challenging repertoire with complex rhythms, varied key signatures
and major, minor and modal harmonies.
Students must demonstrate by
audition: an understanding of note and rhythmic reading, play a
1-2 octave major scale, and understand half-steps and key signatures.
Students should be able to comfortably read the notes in 1st position
and play accurately in the keys of C, G, D, F and Bb. Violinists
aspiring to play in the 1st violin section must be proficient in 3rd
position. Students in Intermezzo are expected to have started
vibrato. (Average grades: 5-8

Divertimento |
|
A string orchestra for advanced string students.
This orchestra will focus on literature selected from standard string
orchestra repertoire. Students in this orchestra will have the
opportunity for national and international tours.
Students must demonstrate by
audition: the ability to read advanced literature in keys of up
to 5 sharps/flats. Play a 3 octave major scale in 8th notes at quarter
note = 60. Demonstrate an understanding of playing in upper positions -
students wanting to play 1st violin should be comfortable through 5th
position and have an understanding of 6th and 7th. Violas should be
able to read in treble clef and cellos in tenor. Advanced bowing styles
such as spiccato, riccochet, etc. should also be demonstrated. All
students should have a continuous vibrato. (Average grades: 8-12)

Concertino |
|
Advanced and committed Divertimento students will
be invited to join the Concertino Orchestra. This orchestra will give
dedicated students a chance to solo with the orchestra on concertos and
will perform standard chamber orchestra literature. Candidates for this
orchestra should be prepared to play both a 3 octave major and minor
scale. Students in this orchestra are required to take weekly private
lessons. They must have the time and be willing to commit 2 -3 hours per
week of individual practice of the Concertino music outside of
rehearsal. (Average grades 10-12)
